  2. How should English be taught? → When we teach students, we consider level of them. Teaching students as matching with their eyes are very important point I think.

What do you think the role of memory and memorization is in learning a second language?
    → Yes,it`s really important.
It`s good way use actions to activate the right brain and to stimulate memory and talking with rapid drills, so that the new material is committed to long term memory.

  3. 1. Who should teach English in Korean classroom?
    - As an middle school English teacher, I have found many unqualified native teachers who could affect students in bad ways. I do not insist on that only Korean teachers must teach in the classroom. In some ways, native teachers are very effective and helpful, but only when they are well qualified and have strong passion to English education.

    2. How should English be taught?
    - Many students find Egnlish very difficult to learn because they believe they have to study English, not enjoy. I believe learning language is quite different from studying. If we study language, we can't find any fun out of it. However, if we enjoy learning it, we can pick it up in no time. That's why teachers need to change their attitude toward English education. Teachers have to try to connect English education with a variety of activities based on text book in school.

  4. How should English be taught?
-There are so many varieties of methods in teahing English from the different intellectuals who have bundle of experiences in teaching of the said language, but one thing one(teacher) must always bear in mind is that "English should be taght in English". What do you mean by this? It means that we, as a teachers of English as a second language, should teach the language to our students in a way that the language should be taught. We should follow all the rules, methods techniues and principles in teaching it inorder to have a good outcomes to the classroom teaching-learning process.

2.Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?

-Based on my weeks of experience in teaching English to one of the korean classrooms,I think it is better to have an English teacher not necessarily a native-speaker but the one who has a lot of knowledge and experiences(the know how) in teaching the subject/language whether he/she is a Korean,an American, a Filipino, a British etc..Because I found out that not all native-speakers has the ability or passion in teaching the language. They can speak English very well..YES! I agree with that but when it comes to the rules of sentence construction or phrases some doesn't know how to do such things. They don't care whether they are gramatically correct or right as long as they can express their feelings and ideas in English language, that's enough for them.
But as what the saying says, "There is always an exception to the rules". Yes, right except of course to those who are licensed and a degree holder and of course those who have had mastered the English language.

  5. Who should teach English in korean classrooms?
There are my suggestion above question. First,a man who like to teach people and has a passion for teaching. Second,a man who want to know korean culture and enjoy to study Korean. Finally, a man who like to serch or study of the various teaching methods according to their(students) abilities.

Why should English language education accomplish?
I want to share my experience. When I was abroad, there was a conference. There were many foreigners who come from America, Japan, Germany, Indonesia and Korea. At that time there were no interpreters who can translate in their own languages. We should communicate with others in English whether they can speak English well or not. At that time I realize that English is international language. The morden time is a age of globalisation. So English is an important instrument to gain information and to communicate. So English language education should be accomplish.

  6. How should English be taught?

I think at the beginning, we need to help students interested in English. Lots of people feels worry about when they start learning new things.
I think teachers can use easy Englissh song, flash cards or fun game in class then students can be interested in English.

And I think a repetitive drill will be helpful for teaching and learning.
When we learn first time, we think we can remember well, but we easilly forget about what we learned. But if we learn same thing again later, we can remember better than before. So I think that could be good way.

Why should Korea English Education System be changed?

We have studied English since middle school.
Even though we have learned it for at least 6 years, when we encounter foreigners, we run away or we cannot say one word.

Korea English Education focuses on getting good scores at Su Neung, rather than how well students can communicate with foreigners. That’s why this results in a lot of problems.

First , students treat speaking and writing part lightly,
Secondly, because students consider English as a subject to enter University, they are under stress during studying.

  8. Who should teach English in Korean classroom?

These days, almost all schools can employ them. So I want to talk about the native teacher who should teach English in Korean classroom.
I teach English with a native teacher from US in the afternoon class at school now. When I met him first, I was surprised because he had never taught before and he didn't have any certificate about teaching. What is worse, he doesn't know about Korea and this is his first visitation here. Of course, Native speakers have some advantages of using English and there are many good teachers from native countries.
In my opinion, If they also have to qualify themselves for teaching Koreans as korean teachers must get the certificate and pass the examination to teach English.
Moreover if they learn our cultures or students before, it's more efficient and more understandable to teach Koreans.

  9. What problems do you think does English education of Korea have?

Firstly, we put students into competition and they have been meeting with keen cmpetition in English education. That's why we can see a lot of teaching materials and books tell a know how.
English is global language, it is enough to have minimal ability to express their intention. There is no need everyone is to be reach the high level.
Our education system should change that someone who is in need of English have to study as they want.
Second, English education in Korea focused mainly on teaching grammatical rules. Despite more than 10 years of public English education, spoken English by Korean students was very poor, because English has focused on reading and grammer. Teachers need to change their attitude toward English education. moreover, we should provide more English programs that students can immers themselves in English whether in the classroom or at play.

  10. What do you think the role of memory and memorization is in learning a second language?

Firt, memorization in learning a second language can help speakers output what they want to say faster and naturally. Also once learners memorize some phrases and expressions they can apply them to specific situations. Even though memorization is helpful to improve second language, Comprehension must be made in advance. Without doing that Speaker can't use properly. It's also important to repeated and reveiwed after memory because memory is getting faint as time goes by.

  11. what should English language education accomplish?

As you know,English is not a foreign language any more and is used all over the world.
English is just a tool to communicate just like computers, letters,Faxs,or cell phones.
The whole world people use English on computers

English is the language that helps we to communicate with everyone else in the world.
It's clear that English is the basic requirement for doing business.

furthermore,it is the most important language in the world politically, economically, socially, scientifically and culturally.

So, English language education is necessary to us.

  13. How do you study speaking English?
I think speaking and writing are more difficult to be good at them than the other skills. We need to practice more so I'll let you know some good ways from our class. 1.Watch the TV drama and repeat the script or imagine that you're an actress then talk to the actor. It's going to be romantic. 2. Make a native friends. They also need some Korean freinds.Give them the tips how to live in Korea and get the tips how to speak. You will be a good friend. 3.Try to speak a lot even you are alone. Good luck!~

  14. Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?

These days there are many native speakers in korea classroom. Students can learn practical English. But they may be given a culture shock by native speakers.
So we need a korean teacher who can teach English in English.

    How should English be taught?

Despite having learned English for a long time,
we get confused and cannot speak one word when we meet with a foreigner. That is problem of current English education in Korea.

In my opinion we need two kinds of English education. One is for exam called Soo-neung. Another is for English conversation. It is taught that students can enjoy English without exam stress. Through pop song and America drama they may be interested in English.

I Second, a teacher who has a varity of teaching resources - storytellings, lots of activities.. and teaching method and teaching skills can be effective and efficient to teach English. Third a teacher who is enthusiastic and has a passion of teaching English should teach. If they don't have much of that, the students will get bored to learn English, and it is quite difficult to have a motivation.

1.Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?
In my opinion, In Korea There are many people interested in English. therefore, we need a professional teacher to give more accurate infomation for our children. so many people trying to acquire the Tesol Certification.
And basically,Teacher should love their children, treat all children equally and know student's level.

2.Why should English language education accomplish?
In my opinion,There are many reasons to learn English.
First,These days,English is essential, not a choice anymore. we must learn to communicate in English .So most people have a speaking knowledge of English.
And then Lately, The world is getting closer.
so Many people go overseas travel and Many students go to study abroad.
Ln conclusion,we learn to survive in the competition. to pass a promotion test,to get a job and so on. This is our reality.

  18. HOW should English be taught?

Sometimes, I receive questions about the reason we should study English. I think that people regard English as a subject. So they take English so hard. To change this misunderstaing, we should guide them to English as a living language.
For example, English is a tool that makes us enjoy the musical 'CATS', understand the flow of the world and communciate more people.
I think that more exposure to the opportunity using English is the best way.
That makes the people who study English know the merit of English.

  19. Who should teach English in Korean?

I think it may differ by the students; whom to teach.
For adults, I think, either native or non-native speakers who have proper education, communication skills and excellent English knowledge definitely will be better as a teacher than just native-tongue. Adults students usually have their own special purposes in learning English such as business, travel or academic purposes. These conditions require the teachers having a certain level of specialized knowledge based on perfect English skills.
However, for young children it's not necessary to have a perfect English knowledge or expert knowledge to teach them, but rather they need to have much experiences and teaching methods with understanding of their learning process and natures.
Thus, whoever having proper English knowledge not necessarily to be perfect with correct pronunciation though and proper experiences could teach them.

  20. As an English teacher, I always have two questions in myself. One is "What should be taught?" The other is "How should be taught?"
English is alive. It comes into my eyes and ears and go out through my mouth and by my hands. In the classrooms, many studets think English is dead. My worries are the space of class is too small and lesson time is short, too. First of all, whatever we take in the classroom,it must be related with the students' interests and the aim of the lesson.
Then, I think singing, game and movie can be helpful. If we teach English in high level,
disscussion and real writing are good. Sometimes, memorizations are necessary. But when we apply these varieties, don't forget to incent the students.(praise, prize)

  21. 1.Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?
    - The teacher should have the teacher's licence or certification at least because he or she will affect the students in many ways. So the teacher has to be the one trained as a 'teacher'. The teacher needs teaching skill of course, and most of all the joy of teaching.

    2. How should English be taught?
    - The teacher should help students to be good at 'reading', 'writing', and 'listening' to follow the educational system. Because the students have to get high degree at 'sooneong'exam system. Also the teacher needs to help them to be good communicaters as the members of global village.

  22. WHO should teach English in Korean classrooms?

In my opinion, our social condition is not good at using English in our life as EFL students. Just we have been learnt english for entering the test what means English is subject as math. It does not regard life, as custom.
Though, nowadays our education is moving.
We has ESL system but it has a limits between our edcation policy and the result.

In conclusion, korea has trial and effect for good ways.
English is taught who knows how to teach L2 as naturally and easily. Whoes nationality does not matter, most important thing is that language is not subject and the teacher should be prepared their students` national attitude and make good relationship is first in the classroom.

  23. The question that I chose was "Who are easier to learn English or other language, children or adults? Interestingly, most teachers' answers in my class were "both of them". In my opinion, it depends on how they learn, and from whom they are taught. That is, teacher's capability of teaching English is required most. Of course there may be some individual differences between children and adults to master English as a second language to some extent. But I think that's the problem of time. Teachers should be able to help the students to be exposed in English as much as they need and to make them use English naturally. That's why I am attending this program.

  24. Why should English eduaction policy be changed?

Students are learning passive English that reading and grammer to easy elvaluate.
Learning English to get high grade is only stressful for students. Students study like that(reading and grammer). So they cannot tell anything when they meet foreigner or go abroad.Englisg is needed as the education for "test" not "language". However Korean teaching of English is condition that conversation is difficult to expect effect.
Therefore education policy should change to use practical English free themselves from test.

A teacher who has an ability to have students learn the language skills and make environment to use the language should teach english in Korea.

  26. "How should English be taught?"

As an English teacher, we should let the students know how many English there are in the world. Because most of students tend to think America English and England English are standard. However, except for these two languages, there are a lot of countries where the people speak English such as India and Newzealand. All these coutries have their own linguistic character. English should be taught in more flexible atmosphere.

When is good time for children to learn English?

In my opinion... Children need to start learning English before enter an elementary shool where English was learnt as a foreign language.
When I was student, I were started studying English at middle school. I did not have subject of English during Elementary education.
At once I could not meet with English that time. That is why, when I entered a middle school, I had fear of it. So I have got bad grade for subject of English exceptionally.
I have learnt that children show from a vary early age that they acquire their native language. Like this as young as possible children can learn foreign language as native spearker.
But here is importance something which we must not miss. We have to teach English to children after they have acquired their native language.

    1. Who should teach English in Korean classroom?
In my opinion, ideal English teachers are supposed to have fluency, generousity and affulent knowledge and understanding of language learning and learners.
However, importance of qualities mentioned above vary with learners' level and age. First, for beginners and young children, generous and patient bilingual teachers are helpful because Koreans are usually shy and introvert in English classes and they may feel frustrated and discouraged when they fail in communication with teachers at the very first stage. As their English have improved, they need more fluent teachers. For very advanded learners, native or English culture experienced teachers are essential since learners need to know various usage and subtle difference of words and phrases. In addition, some expressions are used with totally different meaning from dictionary.
Therefore, I would conclusively like to say that English teachers should be chosen up to learners' situation

HOW should English be taught in a Korean classroom of the elementary schools?

English should be taught naturally like first language acquisition especially in the elementary schools. But English classes should be managed in a systematic way by teachers. Because Korean students are hardly exposed to English without English classes.
Teachers as a model and an encourager should enjoy English and teaching it. Students had to be exposed to English in a relax setting with interesting comprehensible input. Lesson activities are communicative tasks in content based learning. After lesson students should be allowed reading various story books( they're authentic and can give i+1).
If English classes were successful, students could learn English closely to first language acquisition.

  34. What should English language education accomplish?
As a English teacher in EFL,I should have obvious opinion for this question. First, we should know the position of English as a lingua franca (from the book). Even though there are some objections against it, English can't be substituted with other languages until now. And then we should observe the world where our students will live in their future. The future world will need people who can have mutual relations with other people as well as experts, because the world will be like a global village. To do so, we teachers should teach our students the ability to making themselves understood in English and to get along with other people in the global village. That is what English education should accomplish.

Why is group work crucial in learning English?

Group work can encourage students develop their English speaking skill.
In small group, students can practice speaking English by working on various communicative
tasks which should involve interaction such as conveyance of information, group discussion,
classroom survey, solving a problem and making lists etc.
To achieve the best results of the given tasks, they need to participate in group interaction
in a positive and cooperative way.
Each members of a group can have much more opportunities to speak English more comfortably, and confidently, with less anxiety and nervousness, than speaking in front of the full class.
Before starting group activity, relevant and appropriate vocabulary, sentence patterns and grammar should be offered so that students can use such language resources at their disposal during activity.
It's important role of teachers to keep student speaking English throughout activity as they easily fall into temptation of using their mother tongue.
Teachers should also regulate activity so that excessively active participants should not dominate conversation and passive or shy students shouldn't remain silent, by providing them necessary language help.

Q:Why shoudl English language education accomplish?

Last year, I came to teach Korean to foreigners as a volunteer. People coming to learn Korean have various nationalities like Canadian, American, Japanese and European though all of them communicate with English. Native English speakers usually worked in the field related to English education but Europeans didn't. Despite their job having no relation to English, they spoke much more fluently and naturally than me, teaching English for almost ten years. It was too shocking to me, of course I blamed myself badly about neglecting English studying. Through such a personal experience, I found current English education in our country has to change more practically to be able to talk with other countries' people freely and that English is used just as a tool to exchange each other's thoughts and experience other cultures.
Modern society is infinite competition age and our country isn't rich in natural resources, so, to compete in the global village, it is required excellent human ones with international mind, expert ability in their field and good commanding of English and other foreign languages.
English is spoken by at least a quarter of the world's population and it's widely used in every field as a world language.I think communicating with English is not choice but necessity.

Why do Koreans have difficulty mastering English?

I believe there are many reasons, of course. I think the Korean education could be one of the reasons.

First, the Korean educational style has been focused on memorization and regurgitation. It may work for learning grammar and vocabulary, reading, and writing, but may not for listening and speaking. Second, the goal of English learning for the students in Korea, for the most part, is expected to make them pass the exam or get higher score from it, not to motivate them to be good English communicators. Third, English instruction is mostly in classrooms. Therefore, the students are hardly exposed to spontaneous English.

Putting these reasons together, I think that motivation and quality instruction is required to provide the key for English mastery in Korea.

How can group work effectively used in Korean English classroom to improve students' speaking skill?

Korean English education policies are gradually changing to emphasize development of speaking and writing skill as well as reading and listening comprehension in order to prepare our students for English communication ability in this globalization era.
As one of methods to fulfill the purpose, group work in English classroom can be successfully employed to improve students' speaking ability.
In small groups, with much more opportunities to speak English under more comfortable atmosphere than in front of the full class, they can practice speaking English by working on various communicative tasks which involve interaction such as solving a problem, conveyance of information, group discussion, classroom survey, and making lists etc.
It's important for Korean students to experience authentic situation to speak English in form of the above simulated activities in classroom as they have little chance to encounter and speak to English-speaking foreigners outside classroom.

The right answer is a good teacher.
    What is a good teacher?
First of all, The teacher has to love his students very much especially elementary school.
We need a teacher who is a good natured.
If the students love their teacher they love their subject as well.
Second, The teacher has to know their circumstances such as EFL, SOONEUNG, Entrance Exam, etc. It is too hard for Korean to learn English as a language.
We get used to study English not speaking. It doesn't matter the teacher is a native speaker or not.
The most important thing is that the teacher should be a motivator.

Korean students need high quality English teachers. The teachers have to keep creative mind in English. And they should be diligent for learning new English skills.
Teacher who prepare for teaching English, can change their students' mind about English. And they can conduct students' participate.
I think the students have to get something about English when they learn English.(Not just solve exercise books.)
Teachers have to show them "We can enjoy English through the English class" for this, teachers never stop to study how to teach English.

  44. 1. What should English language education accomplish?

Everyone studies English these days, even grand parents do.
So why are so many people crazy about studying English? I think English offers us many opportunities both in Korea and around the world.

First, these days we can learn real english. The goal of learning has been changed by the sense of the time. As time goes by education gets changed in proportion. In the past, Korean english education had been focused only an admission. It had problems with communicating with native-speakers.But currently the korean education has changed to a proccess which is more useful and practical.

Second, this world is be smaller. If you want to go to another country, anytime you can go easily. Not only time, but also distance is reduced. Around 49% people in the world use English which is the common language. It gives people a fixed purpose and the will to learn. These high expectations motivate people.

Finally, to use English gives us many possibilities. It means you are a more competitive person than others. Whatever you do, you can get benefits.

Using English is very natural like breathing, so it is natural that we have to accept English as part of our life.
If we accomlish English language education, we will be able to take more opportunities around world, communicate easily and move around the world more gradely, so I think we should take lessons in English.

  46. WHO should teach English in Korean classrooms?

In my opinion, both native english speakers and non enlish speakers are necessary for teaching enlish in korean classrooms because they have both strong points and shortcomings. By teaching students together, not only they can maximize profits but also make up their shortcomings.
For instance, native enlish speakers can teach students a clear pronunciation because enlish is thier first language. especially about pronunciation, korean enlish teachers have great difficulties in teaching a clear and correct prounciation.

In other hands, navtive english speakers have great difficulties in making students to understand what they intend. It is really common that students don`t understand completely what native enlish teachers say. but korean enlish teachers can help them to understand completely when students have difficulties in understanding what native enlish teachers say. therefore both native and korean enlish teachers can teach students enlish with the best condition in cooperation with each other.

In my opinion, Korean teachers should teach students in Korean classrooms. I strongly believe that Korean teachers can understand Korean students more than the native English speakers do, since the teachers also learned by trial and error as the students would do. However, since there are many difficulties for Korean teachers to provide high quality of English lessons to the students yet, the class should be taught by both native English speakers and Korean teachers in the beginning. In the mean time, Korean teachers need to put much effort to develop their English ability throughout many study trainings. As teachers' English level become good enough to teach students, the proportions of native English speakers in classrooms can be decreased gradually.

Especially Koreas education department must take a bold step to call in the best brains in English. But the cost of English institution is very expensive so school teachers's teaching English ability must be elevated.

What are the problems in Korean educational system of teaching English?
In the Class, students only learn of grammars.
Koreans ralely use English they use in school.

    Who needs to learn English?
We live in a global society, so ideally every should learn it. However, people who works in a setting close to travellers business dealings shoud learn it in the most.

Why am I enrolled in TESOL?
I would like to improve my ability to speak English, and I could utilize it in missionary field as well as being able to teach in Korea.

  50. There has been a lot of discussion about these so-called “unqualified” English teachers. Please allow me to clarify. Indeed, every “native speaker” who is teaching legally in Korea is most certainly qualified. The Korean government only requires that foreigners possess a B.A from a western university. Whether or not you think a teacher is qualified or unqualified is irrelevant. If the masses rose up and protested the job requirements of foreign teachers, perhaps the law would change. The reality is that the demand for English teachers in this country is simply too high. So high that the Korean government is now willing to take teachers who have only completed only two years of university. There is also the strong possibility of the Korean government hiring teachers from the Philippines in the near future. The Korean government justifies there hiring practices by pointing to the value of a western diploma. Indeed, the native speakers who come here with only a B.A are most certainly educated and highly intelligent. In my opinion, it is the lack of experience/training that results in mutual frustration between Korean teachers and native teachers. However, governmental groups like EPIC promise training and seminars but hardly ever deliver on their promises. Miraculously, most teachers I have met here fair amazingly well. They adapt well to the Korean classroom. However, as with any job, there are those who are unqualified. Perhaps they simply weren’t cut out to be teachers, or perhaps they are still immature and are struggling with personal issues. I have had plenty of jobs in my life and I’ve seen plenty of these kinds of people. Korea has been no different. I have seen plenty of unqualified teachers, both Korean and “native”. More certificates will not necessarily result in better teachers, although I think that it can certainly do no harm. However, until the Korean government changes the requirements there will be no motivation for foreign teachers to spend the cash and put in the extra work.

  52. What are effective ways to teach English in Korean context?
Koreans learn English for about 12 to 16 years until university education. Nevertheless, they hesitate to speak English on meeting foreigners. That is partly because they fear making mistakes in conversation, and partly because they are not trained to speak English. Therefore, in teaching English to Koreans, teachers and students have to get used to speak English only in the classroom, so that they can be accustomed to speak and hear English in every English class. I addition to that, Korean students need to practice their English speaking and writing instead of focusing on learning English grammar.

A : Teacher should have total curriculum and then make lesson plan to achieve the goal of curriculum considering student's level and need. Moreover, Teacher should prepare actives to help students some comprehension of lesson when teacher teach English to them based on text box. Teacher should know profile of students (Age, Grade, Level, size), emphasize all areas of Listening, speaking, reading, and writing, what objectives are and how to prepare materials.

What is culture in intergrating culture into language insturction?
    - Historically speaking, we can say that there was a big shift in the concept of culture around 1960s. And the two distinctive concepts resulting from the shift have often been refered to as the " capital C culture" and the "small C culture" . Prior to the 1960s, the study of culture was linked no with communication but with literature.
The primary goal of language study was thus the rapid development of lingustic skills so as to permit the study of great literary works. It was mostly through reading that students learned about the culture of the language they were studying. This type of culture is often referred to as " capital C culture", and it concerns itself with the study of the art, literature, philosophy, technology, and so forth of the people associated with the language group in question.
From the 1960s on, however, people began concerning themselves more with communication. This necessitates a better understanding of the people with whom one was trying to communicate. Hence there was a shift away from "capital C culture" towards " small C culture."

  56. Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?

In my opinion, a teacher who has a good command of English and has a teacher's licence or certification should teach English. It doesn't matter he or she is a native or non-native English speaker.
It is natural that a English teacher should have a good command of English. However, some Korean teachers have difficulty in speaking English completely. So they need to make a effort to develop their speaking ability in English. And a native English speaker needs to have a good command of Korean to communicate with Korean students.
A teacher who has a teacher's licence or certification can teach English effectively. Because he/she knows an effective method of teaching English. And since he/she understands student's learning psychology very well, he/she can elevate student's learning motivation.

  57. How should English be taught?

The most effective way to teach English is a controversial topic. In my opinion, the answer depends on student’s age. Prior to age thirteen, teachers should expose students to English using environment as much as possible. Focusing on fostering listening and speaking skills, teachers should give students many opportunities to use English without worrying about making mistakes. English classrooms should be full of activities such as chants, games and simulations. After graduating from elementary school, students may be ready to think more logically and abstractly. Teachers can give older students various reading materials and writing tasks, and explain English grammar in more detail.

In my opinion, when it comes to learning, no matter what it is, the learners' first impression on the subject would be one of the most important things. I mean that it should be fun, interesting, enjoyable, and exciting. Thinking when I first started to learning English, I really enjoyed it and that's the thing that finally made me become an English teacher now. At that time, I remember I played all day long using English without knowing what they exactly mean. And I think that's not a big problem, because later, I got to know it somehow. Therefore when students start English learning, they should be given various authentic inputs as much as possible in the enjoyable and affectively comfortable atmosphere. Once students become interested in English, they would be highly motivated. And the motivation and enthusiasm towards English learning will guide them to study more and more English. Though many people already know these well, sometimes it is easy to forget but we should keep it in our mind as English teachers everytime.

I think Korean teacher should teach students because almost all the students still have trouble understanding what the foreign teachers are saying and they barely can comprehend the lessons except for those high-level students.
With this situation, some students might loose their interest to learn english. Whenever korean students have trouble understanding the lessons in the class, korean teacher can explain thoroughly the contents. Though it is a must for Korean teachers to have good a grasp of both oral and written english skills.

WHO should teach English in Korean classrooms?

This problem is issued all the time in Korea, and sometimes it is argued as a political problem in Korea. I think the person who should teach English is the most important contents of the question you have asked.
Native teachers and Korean teachers who have lots of professional skills should teach English together. They have to help each other to teach the students. Native teachers cannot understand korean students' habbit or their some rules as much as korean teachers do. Both native and korean teachers join together during the class. For example, korean teachers can explain the grammer more easily than the native speakers do. Native teachers can teach the phonics, or they can correct their pronounciation. Also they can teach more helpful expression to them. Therefore, both native and korean teachers need to teach students in Korea. But there is one thing that we have to be careful. If the students are the kindergarten students, they might noe need the native teachers. The kindergartens students even don't understand korean. Depends on the level of the students, we can choose who is better to them. But the most important thing is their professional skills and their passion for teaching and loving children.

  61. WHO should teach English in Korean classrooms?

It's been the hot issue that who should teach in Korean classrooms for a long time.
Actually it was thought that native speakers were indispensible for the English education. So it's easy to see them in the public schools and private institutes.
If they're qualified teacher it doesn't matter. Rather it could be good opportunity for students to come in contact with other cultures though native teachers. But many natives with no qualification are teaching until now. We've put our head together and we made an alternative idea using qualified Korean-English teachers.
It may possibly solve the problems that we've been worried. But we need a prior condition like well-educated teachers. That's why many Koreans have a course in TESOL. It's the minimum condition for teaching.(They need more...)
And I don't deny the necessity of native teachers. They also a good resource for learning English. We need more wisdom to place both of them in appropriate positions.

What variety or varieties should be taught?

It is true that American English has been taught in Korean English education since English was adopted as a regular subject in formal school education. However, it's almost time to change our way of thinking that American English is the only target that we have to teach to our students. First of all, when we encounter many kinds of English spoken by different racial and cultural group on a global stage, we become perplexed not to be accustomed to different English. We can't teach every kind of English but at least, we have to make our students to admit and understand the existence of English variety. Second, we need to give priority on Korean English and make our students confident about their speaking, even influenced by Korean. When we think of English as a communication tool, this idea is natural. Like above, we need to teach our students the existence of various English in our classroom.

In my experience,I got good marks on the exams of English but I'm not good at speaking in English. It's because of the English Education of Korea is very static and rigid in the way of putting emphasis on grammar rather than speaking in English.
In my opinion,English classes should be taught through English.Leanred by English, students can improve their listening and speaking skills better than now.
Korean students tend to avoid speaking in English with native speakeks.Because they are afraid of noticing their English levels and making mistakes.
But if we'll change English classes by TETE(Teaching Engish Through English)system, they can speak in English naturally and have confidence.
As you know, there are a lot of trials and errors. So firstly,Elementary school will adopt this system on a trial basis and then move on to the junior high school.

In Korea, how to teach English depends on the goal that students have. At the beginners class,
the goal focuses on how to speak and read. However, teenagers class focuses on listning, grammar and Test. I think we won't be a fruent Englsih speaker without following 7 parts - listening, reading, vocaburary, writing, speaking, grammar and practicing. That's my own opinion. Most of Krean stdents have been taught
with all these parts, but they can't speak English fluently. Why? Here's my solution. In English class teachers more focues on practicing not on testing. I know there are some problems that Korean Education policy must change. I wish the policians were more smater.

Why should the Korean English Education System be changed?

Korea English Education in middle school and high school focuses on the university entrance examination which is made up of reading and listening sections because students who have a higher English grade can enter a renowned university. Most Korean students can read and listen to English well, but they cannot speak or write it well. They spent much time studing English when they were university students to get a good job, but they still studied reading and listening in English.
I think language is communication, and it is made of input(listening and reading), output(speaking and writing) and understanding. For this reason, Korean English Education should be changed.

Who should teach English in Korean classrooms?
Korean teachers and native speakers both should teach English in Keoean classrooms. Most Korean teachers have the ability to read English and understand English, but their weak points are speaking, listening and writing. Also, they don't know much about English culture. Native speakers lack knowledge about Korean culture and Korean language that Korean students need. Students not only need English skills (such as reading, speaking, listening and writing), but also should have an understanding of English culture (such as their thoughts, feelings etc.) because it allows Korean students to learn English more effectively. If students don't understand the native speaker the Korean teacher can help explain that condition to the students. If Korean teachers teach them wrong English the native speaker can correct wrong sentences, pronunciation etc. This enables students to learn correct English. So we need both teachers.

  70. How Should English Develop in Korea?

We’ve been taught English since middle school focusing on grammar mostly. But these days, a lot of students are going abroad to study English. They might not just study grammar in other English speaking countries, but it needs lots of money for school and living there. So it can’t be the best solution for English. My suggestion is changing the public English class. Still a lot of teachers at the public school are teaching English based on the text book only and it is mostly focused on the exam not speaking, hearing, writing or reading. My point is that the teacher should use more different materials, not just a text book. They should use materials such as video, audio, scraps from late newspaper, etc. Some would say it can’t be possible as long as the national college entrance exam is vanished. But English is a language, not just a subject for exam. The Public school system shouldn’t miss this point.

However, Korean English Education is not kind. Students have to memorize many words that they do not usually use when they are talking to people. And then, they have to focus on preparing many exams to get a high score. These ways make students lose an intersting to learn English. I believe this is the starting point of troublesome Korean English Education.

Who should teach English in Korean class room?

As well you know Korean people cannot speak English very well though they study English for ten or more years. I think the reason of this phenomenon is text-oriented education and unqualfied English teacher. I believe if a teacher cannot speak English he or she cannot teach speaking English to his or her student.
So I think a native speaker with a little Korean speakig ability or Korean English teacher with a native-like speaking ability shoud teach English in Korean class room.

    How should English be taught?

I believe that students must be interested in English and motivated by themselves. So they should not feel anxious but feel comfortable and be confident in their classes, and have easy access as well as lots of exposure to English through various teaching methods.

Unfortunately, we have been taught English through very limited methods which are only teacher-centered. And students were urged to focus on reading and grammar excessively comparing to speaking and writing because they had to pass the exam.
So students ability of English is very unbalanced ,as we can see, their reading skill is perfect but they can not speak English fluently as much as they can read.

Therefore, English should be taught under the proper environment which makes students more participate in the classes and encourages them to speak freely.
In order to make this environment, I believe teacher's role is important as well.

How to teach English with fun and less stress?

As a teacher, I've been thinking for years to answer this question.
Although I can't give an academic logical answer to this, I'd just like to share my ideas based on my experience.

You’ve might heard about the term of "Edutainment".
Edutainment is a coined word that refers to things are designed to be entertaining and educational at the same time.
The demands for edutainment are highly increased in the various fields such as computer software, broadcasting and education.

Fortunately I worked for a year and half in the Seoul English Village (S.E.V) where is running by Seoul metropolitan government.
Since SEV initiated the edutainment applying to English, it got lots of attention from the media.

There are many differeces on the curriculum and classroom environment between SEV and the school. I just want to mention 2 things briefly.
The curriculums of SEV are focued on 3 themes; Fun,Interact and Education. In fact these themes are almost same features of edutainment.
The classrooms are designed like real places such as bank, police office, bus terminal etc.
So TBL and PPP teaching methods are commonly used.
In the situation rooms, most students learn English by doing, completing missions not only being seated on a chair. They don't even recognize that they are studying because they feel as if they were playing.
Therefore students are motivated by themselves and become so enthusiastic learning English with fun and less stress.
In the result, student survey showed 98% satisfaction on the curriculum.

For those many reasons, I like edutainment very much. I think English is a very active, communicative language. It shouldn't be dead language anymore. That's why teachers need to spend more time to study edutainment and prepare student-center activities.
I'm pretty sure that edutainment will help our class more active and fun.

  79. Who should teach English in the Korean classroom?

    - It depends on the level. At the beginning level students need both a bilingual Korean and Foreign teacher. When they have a problem or if they want to explain their feelings, it is difficult for a foreign teacher to understand and give the necessary care. A Korean teacher solves this problem and, of course, can also explain when students don't understand what the teacher says.

At my school(kindergarten), we didn't have a Korean assistant in the foreign teacher's class until recently. For the reasons above, it was frustrating to both the students and teachers and progress was slow. But now students and teachers are both satisfied with the classes and things are running much more smoothly and efficiently. ~LHJ

Human ability is formed by natural ability and educational efforts. Between them, educational efforts are more important because human ability is formed more after birth.

So Korean English teacher's role is especially important, the reason is that we have EFL situation. Good English teachers should have a good craft through a mixture of personality and teaching skill, knowledge, and experience, and so on. Every factor is important. In Korea the best English teacher should have expert, passion, open mind and confidence.

Therefore, they should always study and effort for good teaching. Teaching is not an easy job. It is true that some lessons and students can be diffcult and stressful at times, but it is also worth remembering that its best teaching can also be extremely enjoyable.

So it is questionable whether the monologue teacher to teach students or Bilingual teacher to teach.
In the period, according to the results, it is depended on student's goal.
For high shool students who are going to University after graduation, needs to be taught by bilingual teacher since it is more technical on University side in studying english, which monolingual teachers usually do not have enough knowledge about.
However, for elementary students, they need monolingual teacher.
Kids around that age, they catch onto the language really quick, just like mother and child's relationship, but still it will take some time for them to catch onto English since it is new language for them to learn beside of Korean.
What I want to say is we need both monolingual and bilingual at this time.

I think using the media is an efficient way to learn English in Korea. The English television channels are broadcast all the time; there must also be subtitles in either English or Korean.

I think that to learn English, it has to happen naturally. For example, when children watch TV, they can hear English and read Korean or vice versa.

A good way to learn English by sound is to listen to English music or watch English film and television. This is a fun way to learn. Watching English films can expand vocabulary and improve the flow of speech from listening to the actors. Also, by listening to International news, new and different accents can be heard.

Also, speaking with Native speakers as much as possible is a great way to improve speaking skills. This can be done either at an English hogwon or with a native speaker at Elementary school. The children should practice speaking with the teacher again and again in order to reach better comprehension and expression.

Reading and listening are also effective ways of developing English. The best way is to begin with a simple book and then, step by step, increase the skill level from easy to difficult.

When Korean students learn English they should know the culture of people who speak English and way of their thinking. so the teachers who is Korean can explain them easily in Korean.
In English class if the students can not understand the lesson, the teacher who can speak Korean can let them understand easily.
Sometimes native speakers let the students learn English actively and give them a great challenge so the students who are in high level can take a native speaker’s class.

Most of Korean students learning in Grammar dominated class are strong to input, reading and listening skills. When it comes to output, writing and speaking, they seem to say, "I have never learned how to write and speak in English.

According to UG, Universial Grammar, everyone can learn at least one language naturally. Even for the illiterature, they can speak.

Before we discuss how English should be taught, we should look through what purpose of learnging English is.

I believe the purpose of learning is to produce what they think. In this point of view, language should be designed for output, speaking and writing.

  88. Who should teach English in Korean classroom?

There are native speakers and non-native speakers as an Enlish teacher in Korean classroom. I want to talk to native speakers. Korean schools need more native speakers as an English teacher than before. There are lots of good native teachers of course. But sometimes not. It sometimes seems Some native teachers don't have knowledge and understanding of their learners. In my kindergarten, I heard a native teather said children are MONSTER. And He treated them impolite. I think he don't have understanding of children. Schools or institutes often tends to employ English teacher just because he or she is native speaker. It's no right.

And then what is good standard to employ? I think he or she has good character, educational spirit and knowledge and understanding of their learners even if he or she doesn't have teacher's certificate. Korean shcools have to employ proper person through detail interveiw, I think.

The Korean parent will say, ``Why aren't you studying?'' The assumption is that the high school classroom is not an adequate source of learning, and that additional resources are essential to obtain entry into top universities. One simply needs to memorize everything to be successful. A child's duty is to study.
Many Korean high school students spend more than 12 hours per day in classrooms studying, nearly double the official national curriculum. Extra hours take place at school, alone, with private tutors and in cram schools (hagwon). Although Korea spends over 10% of its GDP on education, it is estimated that roughly half of the amount is spent on extra-curricular study. The focus is on memorization of data to prepare for multiple-choice tests.
Koreans rightfully take pride in ``best of world'' rankings for high school students' knowledge in mathematics and science on paper and pencil tests. But these students too often lack the ability to apply their learning to life-like situations. They spend little time in chemistry laboratories and field-studies. They regurgitate history and literature as taught, but cannot critique the reasoning. They memorize grammatical rules and vocabulary without being able to write in their native language or in English.
