For groupwork, making some groups with mixing less fluent students and more able students can help students who cannot follow the class understand well. Most students might need courage to ask something to teachers. In this case, they can get a help through friends without any burden.

However, If more able students is in the less fluent students groups, strong students might feel bored and become frustrated, so they can lose meaning of cooperative work. Also streaming makes weaker students become demoralized. And teachers may predispose them to stay in this category rather than having the motivation to improve

  2. In Kosin TESOL class I've been experiencing some kinds of grouping students as a student. Pair work and 3-4 members group work were very efficient to complete the tasks. The students can teach themselves and during the procedure they can get new knowledge.
But when the students in the group are in different level or they don't want to cooperate with someone they dislike, there will happen a problem.
So the teacher have to prepare what to do when they face the problem like this.

  3. Classroom streaming groupwork activity is a lot of fun for the learner because it creates rapport and there is cooperation among members and most specially the most able learner has a great help to those who are less able learner and its also support to the saying that "two heads are better than one".In another words, there is a collaborations of opinions and ideas among members of the group that leads to a productive performance or work.

On the other hand, there is a bad side or disadvantage into this kind of classroom activity. Because sometimes more able learners dominate the group inorder to finish early the assigned task of the teacher. Sometimes most able learner doesn't aknowledge ideas from the members who are less able. Another is less able learner doesn't participate in group activity because he might perhaps does mistakes in expressing his ideas and the members will not aknowledge it. And sometimes nobody's take the initiative to start the given task by the teacher, they passes it from one hand to another.

There are both benefits and disadvantages to grouping students together during class. For instance when students are allowed to collaborate they often are more creative and can find fun and excitement in a small group activity. Particularly when a degree of creativity is involved, students can feel a great pride in the work they develop as a team. Also, the higher level students then have the ability to assist the lower level students. Some students are afraid to ask questions or admit they don't understand to their teacher but feel comfortable asking a peer.

On the other hand, it can sometimes be more difficult to keep groups of students on task. They are more inclined to socialize and talk among themselves in their native language then to focus on their given task.

When students are steamed for thier group work
    there are some advantages.
first, higher level students can establish their own knowledge more stable and develop leadership as teaching and helping lower level ones.
second, weaker students can be getting better about language being helped from stronger ones
    however there are some disadvantages.
first, higher level students can easily get bored and can feel that there are any harms in studying with lower level ones so they can lose their interest.
second weaker students can make themselves to lose confidence as comparing their ability with stronger ones.

Streaming students can help students at different levels within a class because it might overcome the whole-class teaching problem that weaker students might get left behind while stronger ones might become irksome. However, it might lose the benefit of group cohesion.

Students in a mixture level group can help each other. That is, less fluent students can get help from more able students while stronger students can understand themselves more by helping others.

By grouping same level students together, weaker students can get special help while stronger students can get more challenging tasks to perform. By contrast, weaker students might become demoralized and the value of cooperative work might be lost.

It is the advantages of groupwork that gives students chance to increase their talking with the member of the group and allow that group students have opportunity to speak in front of group members. Students could work with their co-worker more convenient than with their teacher. They also can get broader skills of cooperation and negotiation. Students participate in their group that is suitable and make their own decisions without help of teacher. It is the disadvantages of groupwork that students are easy to be noisy. It makes teacher feel to lose control of students. Some students don't like take part in their group because their peers dominate. Groupwork activities take longer time than pairs activities and could be more chaotic.

Streaming groupwork activity brings that the more able students can help their less fluent or knowledgable colleagues. This will result in the strong students themselves being able to understand more about the language. On the other hand, the weaker students get a help and learn from their friend comfortably, as weaker students might have less confidence during class and sometimes overstrain themselves. Streaming groupwork gives us the opportunity to go to a group of weaker students and give them the special help which they need. It also allows us to give group of stronger students more challenging tasks to perform.
However, there are disadvantages of streaming students for groupwork that stronger students might get bored and become frustrated while the weaker students get left behind. Second, sometimes stronger students dominate the group and weaker group might become demoralised.

  9. When we stream the students we consider their abilities. The mixture of weaker and stronger students is one of the good ways to steam. there are some advantages of that way. For example, the more able students can help less fluent colleagues. Through the helping process, the stronger students able to understand more clearly and the weaker students can get help. But there are a few disadvantages of this streaming. When the high level students help the low level students the stronger students can be bored. And when they have group working, the stronger students can have more chances to participate in their work. So the weakers might become demoralized. Although the disadvantages that the high level students become frustrated and low level students get few changes to participate the groupworking is can be existed, this is very useful way of streaming.

Streaming is to put school children in groups according to their ability. One suggestion is that pairs and groups should have a mixture of weaker and stronger students. In such groups the more able students can help their less fluent or knowledgeable colleagues. The process of helping will result in the strong students themselves being able to understand more about the language; the weaker students will benefit from the help they get. However stronger students might find irksome and weaker students might become demoralised. Furthermore weaker students may be stay in this category rather than having the motivation to improve out of it.

According to Harmer, from Chapter 10, there are the advantages and disadvantages of streaming students for groupwork.

If we are going to get students at different levels within a class to do different tasks, we should create groups in which all the students are at the same level. This is Streaming.

This gives us the opportunity to go to a group of weaker students and give them the special help which they need, but which stronger students might find irksome. It also allows us to give groups of stronger students more challenging tasks to perform. However, some of the value of cooperative work - all students helping each other regardless of level - may be lost. And students in the weaker groups might become demoralised.

    ReplyDelete
  12. There are two different suggestion in streaming students according to their ability. One is that weaker and stronger students are mixed in a group and another is creating groups in which all the students are at the same level that will be different from some of the other groups.
Mixing weaker and stronger students together in the same group may have several advantages in terms of cooperative work.
The less fluent or knowledgeable students can get help from the more able students and the stronger students are able to understand more about the language.
However, the stronger students might become frustrated while the weaker ones might get left behind.
When it comes to differentiation of groups in accordance with their ability, teachers can take care of weaker student groups to give them special help but stronger students might find irksome. On the contrary, students in the weaker groups might become demoralised and the benefits in terms of group cohesion might be lost.

  13. Ban Min jeong (MB)25 June 2009 at 01:03

When there are weaker and stronger students in the same class, teachers can consider whether students should be streamed according to their ability or not. If each group has a mixture of students, the more able students can help their less fluent or knowledgeable colleagues as well as they themselves will be able to understand more about the language.
However, unless students cooperate with each other, it won't be able to successful class. Furthermore, when students have different interest when they learn together, some student may be feel boring or difficult to do something.

I think streaming students for groupwork can bring many advantages to themselves. The students can help each other in a group. The stronger students are able to understand well about the knowledge and experience the higher thought during helping the weaker students. The weaker students can get help from more able students. Sometimes, the students like learning English and getting the information about task from their friends more than learning from their teacher.
However, there are some disadvantages in grouping students. The less fluent students don’t have enough confidence to participate in a groupwork through comparing their co-worker, so they look like looker-on. It also can cause the stronger students to feel bored or burned with taking responsibility for their group.

There are both the advantages and disadvantages of streaming students for group work. First, the students of high level can help their classmates of low level to understand lessons without teacher’s intervention in class, and they can do activity more cooperative than individual work. I feel that students much more concentrate on their classmates’ explanation than teacher’s. On the other hand, the students of low level may assume the attitude of onlookers because they sometimes expect their classmates of high level to do high activity or they cannot do activity themselves because their classmates of high level already do themselves.

When the group or pairs are the mixture of weaker and stronger students, one of the advantages of streaming is the cooperative work.
The weaker are well motivated by the stronger and try to resemble the stronger's attitude during the class so they benefit from the help they get. And the stronger are motivated as well when they are approved by the weaker students.
But the disadvantage is that the stronger students are easy to be thirsty for something challenging. They get bored and frustrated when they are with the weaker who might get left behind.
But due to the disadvantage of this, when we start grouping weaker students are together, they might be demoralised without any motivation and improvement.
That is why we need to put individual students together in terms of group cohesion but careful choice of tasks and activities are needed.

  17. (Advantage)It gives much fun and make student collaborate. Even a lowr level student can learn how to do it from classmate conduct.
(Disadvantage)Teachers have to keep an eye on students especially to lower level students.

  19. In my opinion, there are more advantages we can have by grouping students than disadvantages. Students can be more active when they have to work in pair because it gives students the number of talking opportunities for each student. Also it encourages students to cooperate and be more private to work so they will study actively.
On the other hand, there is some disadvantages. If u set the groups, it is likely to be noisy and hard to manage. And it takes time to organise groups.

    1. advantages
If students work together, they can help each other. They can share their opinions and usefull information. And if they need to find some pattern, they work together so reach out results easily than just work alone.
And they can learn how people work together and how they settle lots of different opinions.

    2. disadvantages
If group working worked well, it has lots of advantages. But sometimes it doesn't work very well.
If some student didn't want to do group work, just one or two member has to all of that work.
And when teacher gave them time to group working, sometimes students can just doing else.
In these cases group working is not that helpful.

Teaching a class as a whole or groups all have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Much discussion centers round whether students should be streamed according to their ability.
The process of helping will result in the strong students themselves being able to understand more about the language; the weaker students will benefit from the help they get.
If we are going to get students at different levels within a class to do different tasks,we should create groups in which all the students are at the same level. This gives us the opportunity to go to a group of weaker students and give them the special help which they need, but which stronger students might find irksome.
There is the danger that students in the weaker groups might become demoralised.
Successful differentiation through grouping occurs when we put individual students together for individual activities and tasks, and the composition of those groups changes, depending on the tasks we have chosen.

In our class, we almost every time make groups for some activities.
During the groupwork, I can find out both points, advantage, disadvantages.

First, I'll brief advantages of groupwork.
Brain-storming : I think it is the best merit, sharing opinions with each and all. Then the problem can be solved naturally.
Helping each other : In my case, whenever I didn't understand what subject we had to discuss exactly, I used to question other members what it was. Then he or she always explained me kindly. It was very helpful to me.
Learn the way : when groupwork we can learn the way how to delivery their own opinion from other members.

    Then I'll point out disadvantages.
Different level : when the members's level (mainly speaking part) are different, low level students feel small easily. ( I think At that time is a suitable time the high level students give them helps.) It has a possibility that in groups of high level students.
Unconcerned : One more is that if one student present some opinion, next other students following the opinion with no reason just like a domino. The students are not interested in their topic.

The weaker students can get help from more able students and the strong students able to understand more about the language. Or we could create groups at the same level. If we streaming like this the strong students might find irksome. It also allows us to give groups of stronger students more challenging tasks to perform. The other side, the weaker groups might become demoralised and we may somehow predispose them to stay in their groups rather than having motivation to improve out of it. Streaming students can have advantages and disadvantages.

Streaming students has many advantages and disadvantages. First of all, to mixing weaker and stronger students is possible to help their fluent or knowledgeable colleagues. As a result, the stronger students will be able to understand more about the language and the weaker students will benefit from the help they get. But stronger students may lost their interesting.
With complementing this weak points, students at different levels within a class can get different tasks. It is possible to give opportunity for all students. However, some cooperative work may be lost.

  28. Teacher can make streaming students for groupwork according to their ability. In the same level streaming students for groupwork there are some advantages and disadvantages. First, students don't loose their confidence. Second, high level group can help low level group. So teacher should help the lowest group. But in lower or the lowest group students can feel frustrated and difficult about tasks.

In contrast, in the different level group streaming students there are also some advantages and disadvantages. They can help each other. Through the helping process, the superior students able to understand more clearly and the inferior students can get help. But sometimes the superior students can get bored and the inferior students can be demoralized or passive.

  29. According to Jeremy Harmer, Ch.10, there are the advantages and disadvantages by two possible ways to making a streaming group.

One grouping, mixtured by weaker and stronger students, has an advantage that all different level students in one group can give a good influence each other.
By helping their less fluent colleagues, the more able students can get benefits of being able to understand more about the language and through this process, the weaker students will have the proper help.

Through another grouping by getting students at different groups which all the students are at the same level, also there are some advantage and disadvantage.
The advantage is, to stronger students group, more challenging tasks are given to them and to weaker students group teachers can give the special help they need.
The disadvantage is that weaker students group might become demoralized and teachers may somehow predispose students to stay in their position rather than having a motivation. Also stronger students might find irksome because of teacher’s attention to weaker students and above all, the value of co-work may be lost.

  30. In the class, there are many of the students for their working for tasks. In general, the purpose of the studing they can make groups with some members. Occasionally groupwork needs write group srory, role-play and discuss an issue. But sometimes it is worse ghan individual. According to the teachers, or students the purpose of groupwork has a lots of advantages and it is;
    1. Students get a lots of taling chance.
    2. Personal relationship makes a great chance of different opinions and varied contributions.
    3. It encourages broader skills of cooperation and negotiation.
    4. Groupwork students can evaluatie each others performance both positively and negatively.
    5. It promotes learner autonomy by allowing students to make their own decisions in the group without being told what to the by the teacher
    6. Some students can choose their level of particiaption more readily.

    But groupwork has many of disadvantages and it is;
    1. It is kikely to be noisy.
    2. Not all students enjoy it since they would prefer to be the focus of the teacher's attention.
    3. Individuals may fall into group roles that becoms fossilised, so that some are passive whereas others may dominate.
    4. Groups can take longer to organise than pairs.

  31. There are some advantages of groupwork. We can put students in groups in order to give them more opportunities to talk. And through groupwork, we can raise the students self-determination. They became think and decide something by themselves. Although not all students are not very active, some students may play an important role in their group.

There are also some disadvantages of groupwork. Not all students like their own members so they want to go another group or change some members in their group. And if teacher don't change the members of group once in a while, side effects are occurred - the group member's role is fixed and then some students lose their enthusiasm about studying and only a few of group members would end up finishing the assessments.

The main advantages of groupwork is that encourages broader skills of cooperation and negotiation. So when teacher divide groups, we should have a mixture of weaker and stronger students. There are some advantage. The weaker students get a help and learn from their friend comfortably and the strong students able to understand more about the language. And the stronger are motivated as well when they are approved by the weaker students.
On the other hand, the stronger students get bored and frustrated when they are with the weaker who might get left behind. And sometimes stronger students dominate the group and weaker group might become demoralised without any motivation and improvement.

Because all of students in the classroom are
participate in group-work, they would have much less mental burden than individual work. thus ,classroom's atmosphere is much brighter, students will be full of beans too. besides, children can express various opinion in an atmosphere of freedom, they are able to gather a lot of information through the
    brainstorming.
On the other hand, if we have no trust between teachers and students and the teacher can not control the class, the class will be break up resultless in a scattered atmosphere.
moreover, children takes an overly optimistic views of their class, so they would passing time without any class preparation.

  34. The advantage of streaming students for group work is giving special help for weaker students
so that this work motivate weaker students to study. But in other hands, stronger students might feel irksome.
Disadvantage of Streaming students is if students study with weaker students, they might feel demoralised.Because weaker students has limitation for work and that time teacher will help them for their problems. It might makes them passive on their group work.

  35. The advanages of the streaming students for groupwork are increases the amount of speaking time, they to work and promoting learner independence relatively quick. Also increases the number of talking opportunities, encourages broader skills of cooperation and negotiation, students can choose their level of participation more readily.

Disadvantages are encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and do not help a class develop a sense of belonging, takes much more time and the chances of misbehavior are greater, not always popular with students.

Streaming students for groupwork is effective to encourage students to focus on learning. But there are contravercy about grouping students by score. There are advantages and disadvantages.
First advantage is difference of teaching method as students' abillity. So they can be interested in their class. Not bored, not too difficult.
Second advantage is that they can cooperate with each other easily. So they can be affect positively to improve their English.
third, they feel competition to get higher score and go to higher level. Appropriate competition can make them study harder.
But, disadvantage is that their outcome have limitation depending on grouping. It's hard to skip to higher group. Lower group make lower outcome and higher group make higher outcome.
So sometimes we need to divide groups depending on other standards.

  38. Jung Hee-Jung (WB)7 July 2009 at 05:09

When streaming students get together, they
can help each other. Some students who have
high level are able to explain what they understand to other students who don't know something. I think it is much better method
    than teachers teach them something.
The students of the same age can explain
more easily what they know than adults.
And it will be able to improve their cooperation in each group.
They can share their opinion and useful information. And if they need to find something, they can reach better result easily than work just alone. And they can learn how to work together and how to share a lot of different opinions.
But sometimes it isn't good for students. Because a few student doesn't want to make groups with other students. So if they made a group , they will be lost their interest in studying the subject.
Also weaker students who isn't interested in studying the subject will be hurt their pride. Eventually it will be unuseful.

  39. First of all, I wonder how students are streamed. We don't have any perfect standard for streaming students. So it may be dangerous for students. Because streaming student for group work may cause that lower students are disappointed about their own abilities more and more. When we stream students, we should always care for lower student's feeling.
But indeed steaming students for group work is effective. The students who has similar ability of english can help each other about work of similar level and teacher can help them to develop their ability step by step. And teacher can easier make student's homework of each level.

One advantage for working in groups is that it gives the students a chance to work and think together. This is an important skill to have because it is good to learn how to listen to other ideas. Another advantage is that if it is a big project, you can divide up the work and the students can choose what part of the project they want to do. That way their strengths and weaknesses can be seen. It can also be an advantage for students who are really shy. If they are forced to work in a group it will help them talk with other students and learn social skills. A disadvantage of working in groups is that one or two students may end up doing all the work. If there are lazy students they may rely on other students to do their work. Another disadvantage of working in groups is sometimes individual ideas are not heard. If someone is very stubborn they may not want to hear other people’s ideas and make everyone do what they say.

  41. Advantages of streaming students for groupwork:

This gives us the opportunity to go to a group of weaker students and give them the special help which they need. It also allows us to give groups of stonger students more challenging tasks to perform and gives them to do arrange of tasks for which pairwork is not sufficient or appropriate. This is a good chance for students to have different opinions and varied contributions.

Disadvantages of streaming students for groupwork:

There is the danger that students in the weaker groups might become demoralised and get left behind. And the stronger students may be lost the value of cooperative work. Teachers can feel that they lose control because of various activity and group work can take more time than pairs.

  42. The first of the advantages of students for groundwork is the number of groups have a lot of chances to express their own ideas. Second of it, students can boarder skills of cooperation and negotiation than pairwork, esp. confucian principal countries such as Hong Kong, whose students can prepare their expression to the groups. Third of it, the students can deicide autonomy, not by teacher. Forth of it, students can choose third proper levels unlike whole-class or pairwork****
    The disadvantages of students for groupwork are the following;
First, noisy and hard to control sometimes. Second, Some of students don't enjoy the class who are like to be paid attention by teachers. Third, group roles become fossiled; some may be passive, others are may dominate. Forth, taking time longer than other activities.
Through these advantages and disadvantages I think teacher will be needed to organize whole -class , groupwork, pairwork and individual properly for the characters of each classes. This could tell us teacher's abilities and how experiences of teaching.

disadvantages - Stronger students might find irksome. group of stronger students more challenging tasks to perform. There is danger that students in the weaker groups might become demoralised.
