The "Language Discovery Challenge" activity used in meeting 13 wasn't designed for language learners (or language learning!), but rather for teachers with advanced-level level skills.
However, even superior language users would find the activity challenging.
If you found the activity frustrating, outline some of the reasons why you found it frustrating, and make some suggestions for improving the activity.
If on the other hand you enjoyed the activity, explain what made the activity appealing to you.

When we teaching grammar, students are cannot understand the result of study because sometimes it was seperated with common conversation habits. If the students feel the grammar familier, teachers have various method of teaching grammar. Grammar can be introduced in a mumber of ways, and we can ask them to work out for themselves. Teachers provide opportunities for students to practise different grammar points using many kind of method for practice more engaging. Teaching and practice grammar have four grades. Introducing grammar, Discovering grammar, practising grammar and grammar games are the grades. For example Introducing grammar, if the students are elementary school ages, beginner, teenage, adult plus can be use. But most of the methods are according to the students levels of study or their situation teachers choose any kind of method suit.
ReplyDeleteThe "Language Discovery Challenge" activity used in meeting 13 was challenged me a lot.It was not a difficult activity but really challenged me and at the same time interested me to do that kind of activity in my future class.Because it challenges students' critical thinking towards language awareness.Considering myself as a learner of a second language, I found it challenging because of the fact that I am not used into it. As long as I can speak English, I don't care what rule in grammar I am using to. But at the same time made me realise that as a teacher of English as a second languge, we should know all of these things so that when the time comes where our students eliciting questions from us about anything and everything under the ENGLISH LANGUAGE, we can answer their questions confidently because we learnt the language.
ReplyDeleteDiscovery activity is somewhat different from traditional learning activities. It requires quite an effort of both teachers and students.
ReplyDeleteIn Korea, especially for my generation(late 40's), we seldom used to this kind of activities.
Since I study English, I met many American teachers, and they are different from Korean teaches in teaching method. They were using a inductive approach giving discovery tasks. Many times I felt frustrated with this activities when I couldn't understand the rule thoroughly. But when teachers gave sufficient explanation about the activity and gave tasks which were able to be solved logically, I enjoyed the activity. And it was very impressive and made me feel confident about myself and my ability.
During the class on chapter12, I enjoyed this activity, because the task was easy to understand and the example was quite simple.(finding out the past tenses)
In conclusion, I think discovery activity could work with students when they are well-organized by teachers. And I think this activity would be most efficient as reviewing method to higher level students. And once students get used to this approach they can go further research on themselves.
I found the reason of Example 3 pp.213 activity " Dissappoinent" frustrating is that this active will need student's certain of preceded speaking skill . and for teacher, it will be hard to student's concentrate during the sequence for these activities. As most of my students in the school or private schools they just are reluctant to role-play or speak in front of classmates or take it too light. Anyway, If this active happens, only high leveled classmates will role-play, the rest will just watch with boresome. Even though the idea of context of this activity by Hammer using teen's interests by opposite agenda or peer friends, If few participants only enjoy the play, its sequences of this activity maybe just monotonous for the rest.***
ReplyDeleteI can reform this actives with material such as a big paper clock that I can change the time and writing present and past along a long line on the board and prepare 3 people dolls and pretend acting with show the time changing for past and present and let the whole-class follow the teacher's explanation of the sequences for present and past.
